Abstract:
Huge centrifugal force requires special stiff mounting technology of the image sensors and the driving and control boards, e. g., wireless connections.

A pair of stereo-high-speed video cameras attached to the propeller shaft

On-flight measurement of deformation of a propeller.
The non-intrusive in-flight measurement of the deformation and the resulting local pitch of an aircraft propeller or helicopter rotor blade is a demanding task. The idea of an imaging system integrated and rotating with the aircraft propeller has already been presented at the 30th International Congress on High-Speed Imaging and Photonics (ICHSIP30) in 2012. Since then this system has been designed, constructed and tested in the laboratory as well as on real aircraft. Based on the gained experience a new rotating system for the application on helicopter rotors is now being constructed. In this paper we outline the principle of the applied Image Pattern Correlation Technique (IPCT), a specialized type of Digital Image Correlation (DIC), and describe the construction of the rotating 3D image acquisition system. Further, the results of the ground and in-flight tests will be shown and discussed.

Fritz Boden born 1979 in Dresden (Germany) finished his studies at the Technical University in Dresden in the branch of Aeronautical Engineering in 2005. First he started working at the DLR Braunschweig for the Department of Technical Acoustics. Later he changed to DLR Göttingen where he works in the development of optical measurement techniques, especially IPCT, for in-flight application. He was coordinator of the AIM project and the AIM² project. He performed several flight testing activities on Airbus A320, A380, A350, Piaggio P.180 and EVEKTOR VUT-100 Cobra. His research interests include the development of measurement methods, in particular of optical methods for deformation and flow measurements.
